Improving Hen Welfare in Ghana

Cage free Birds

At Animal Welfare League, we firmly believe that egg producers are key players in ensuring the welfare of their hens. Every decision they make directly impacts the lives of these animals. That is why we are committed to educating producers on improved bird welfare systems in Ghana.

In our 2023 workshops across three regions, we emphasized the vital role producers play in hen welfare, showing how their decisions directly impact the lives of laying hens.

The workshops covered the

importance of:

  • Improved hen welfare systems by exploring the benefits for both hens and producers.

  • Cage-free network where we invite producers to join our network, a valuable resource for businesses seeking cage-free options.

  • Minimum Welfare Standards for producers to learn about essential elements like loose housing, natural behaviors, nest access, and enrichment.

Farm Visits & Support:

Our team does not stop at workshops. We also conduct farm visits - offering:

  • Free veterinary consultations based on our thorough observations of their farms and

  • Guidance on implementing the Minimum Welfare Standards, which includes perch materials, nesting boxes, litter, and proper space allowance.

The cage-free network is not just a platform: it is a vibrant community committed to promoting humane practices in egg production. For corporate companies striving to fulfil their cage-free commitments and consumers who prioritize animal welfare, our network serves as a valuable resource.
