Our History

A group of final year veterinary medicine students from SVM-KNUST who were passionate about helping animals and participated/organized community programs aimed at helping animals wanted a way to continue helping more than one animal that may come through their clinic door when they graduate.

Daniel Abiliba, a member of this group, carried out anecdotal studies to determine the animal welfare awareness level in basic school children, youth and how frequent animal welfare issues made it to mainstream media.

Culminating on the research, Daniel founded Ghana Animal Welfare Society on 3rd November, 2021 which was later renamed as Animal Welfare League, Ghana(AWL) and registered as Animal Welfare League Limited By Guarantee at the Registrar General Department of Ghana in Accra on 7th April, 2022.

AWL has since then been working with Animal Advocacy Africa to develop an effective organizational framework and strategies, has joined Open Wing Alliance and Aquatic Animal Alliance to contribute to the global animal welfare movement.
