Aquatic Animal Welfare

Aquaculture is the major occupation for most Ghanaians, especially for those living along the country's coastal borders, and so, seeking the welfare of aquatic animals not only holds the promise of preventing animal suffering but also the potential to improve many human lives and livelihoods.

Human consumption of aquatic animal products continues to increase and the demand is driving up the production of aquatic animals. The threat to their welfare is higher now than ever before which calls for coordinated actions in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, to protect and improve aquatic animal welfare.

Undertaking homegrown research works to understand the unique welfare challenges that exist in the aquaculture industry in the country is one of our core research areas.
