Animal Welfare League is a leading advocacy organization based in Ghana with operations currently in Ghana, South Africa, Morocco, and Egypt, dedicated to advancing humane treatment of farmed animals across Africa. Through policy reform, public education, producer, and corporate engagement, we work to create systemic change that improves the lives of billions of farmed animals especially chickens within agricultural systems. Our efforts span local, national, and international landscapes, partnering with policy makers, industry stakeholders, and communities to drive meaningful, lasting progress.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Animal Welfare League (AWL) is seeking strategic, and mission-driven individuals with a passionate interest in animal advocacy to join our Board of Directors. As a board member, you will play a critical governance role, providing fiduciary oversight, guiding organizational strategy, and championing our mission across influential networks. This is an extraordinary opportunity to shape the direction of one of the most pressing ethical movements of our time.
This is a rewarding volunteer opportunity to support a worthy cause and to help Animal Welfare League (AWL) achieve its strategic goals. While the board is not involved in AWL’s daily operations, it is accountable for ensuring that the organization adheres to its strategic direction and works to achieve the strategic goals approved by the Board. The Board monitors the policies and procedures used by the organization to fulfill its objectives and measures outcomes to ensure that goals are achieved and risks minimized.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide strategic direction and oversight aligned with the organization's mission and long-term goals
Participate in board meetings, committee assignments, and annual planning retreats
Ensure sound financial stewardship, legal compliance, and ethical governance
Actively participate in fundraising initiatives, donor cultivation, and revenue diversification strategies
Plan to remain an active board member for a three year term.
Advocate for policy reforms that advance farm animal welfare at local, and international levels
Evaluate organizational performance and support the Executive Director in key decisions
Serve as ambassadors for the organization within professional and personal networks
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
A demonstrated commitment to animal welfare
Strong strategic thinking and a collaborative, solutions-oriented mindset
Ability to dedicate approximately 4 hours per month to board duties
Alignment with AWL's mission and values
Preferred
Prior board, governance, or nonprofit leadership experience
Background in finance, accounting, legal, or fundraising
Experience with animal welfare issues within the African context.
