About the Animal Welfare League

The Animal Welfare League (AWL) is a nonprofit organisation advancing farmed animal welfare across Ghana, South Africa, Egypt, and Morocco. Our work spans corporate cage-free campaigns, producer training, policy advocacy, and research. We are a member of the Open Wing Alliance

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Corporate Campaigns Lead to drive corporate outreach and advocacy across Africa on a part-time, independent contractor basis. This role leads AWL’s flagship corporate engagement work—securing cage-free commitments from major food companies, hotels, and restaurants—and provides strategic direction to outreach staff across multiple countries.

The ideal candidate combines strong relationship-building skills with strategic campaign thinking, and has a track record of winning corporate policy commitments in the animal welfare, food systems, or related advocacy space.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Campaign Leadership

  • Develop strategies and plans for corporate outreach across AWL’s four countries of operation.

  • Design and run flagship initiatives including hotel rankings, restaurant animal suffering barometers, accountability tracking, and local outreach programs, etc.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of strategies and campaigns and implement improvements.

Corporate Engagement & Negotiations

  • Oversee research, selection, and securing meetings with target food companies across Africa.

  • Lead negotiations with key corporate decision-makers if necessary to secure cage-free and related welfare commitments.

  • Identify and develop partnerships with corporate stakeholders to advance AWL’s mission.

Team Leadership & Coordination

  • Lead hiring, onboarding of corporate campaigns staff in Ghana, Morocco, Egypt, and South Africa.

  • Manage and provide strategic coordination to outreach staff across all countries.

  • Oversee, and manage volunteer coordinators for campaign activities.

Advocacy & Communications

  • Supervise the creation of advocacy materials including reports, position papers, and presentations.

  • Create and share event agendas for volunteer actions (digital and physical).

  • Implement and manage campaigns across physical and digital channels.

Monitoring & Reporting

  • Continuously assess and report on campaign results.

  • Develop evaluation methods to identify strengths and areas for improvement.

Qualifications & Experience

Required:

  • Demonstrated experience in corporate campaigns, advocacy, or stakeholder engagement—ideally in animal welfare, food systems, sustainability, or a related field.

  • Proven track record of securing corporate policy commitments or similar negotiated outcomes.

  • Experience managing or coordinating staff and volunteers across multiple locations.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Strong strategic thinking and ability to design multi-channel campaign plans.

  • Comfort working independently in a remote, cross-cultural environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience working in or with organisations across Africa.

  • Familiarity with the Open Wing Alliance or similar international coalitions.

  • French or Arabic language skills are a plus.

Engagement Terms

  • This is an independent contractor position. The contractor is responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and statutory obligations.

  • Compensation is a monthly retainer of $1,000 USD ($12,000 per year) for 14–20 hours per week.

  • A monthly activity report is required by the last working day of each month.

  • The retainer is paid monthly in accordance with AWL’s operating policies. A monthly timesheet is required for internal assessment.

Equal Opportunity

The Animal Welfare League is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from candidates of all backgrounds. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team.

Interested candidates should submit a CV/resume, and a brief cover letter outlining relevant experience and availability to careers@animalwelfareleague.org. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
